How your year is counted

A book counts in the year of its date read, if it is on your Read shelf. Books you are currently reading and books on your to-read shelf don't count toward the year; the to-read pile gets its own card.

Here is what the five cards say for the sample Goodreads library on this page, a made-up year of classics read through October 2026:

  • The count: 17 books and 5,776 pages, so 340 pages a book on average; the longest was Moby-Dick at 635 pages.
  • Month by month: February was the busiest with 4 books.
  • Top authors: Jane Austen with 3, then Charles Dickens, Edith Wharton and Willa Cather with 2 each.
  • Ratings: 15 of the 17 are rated, averaging 3.8 stars (57 stars over 15 books).
  • The to-read pile: 5 books waiting, 3 of them added this year.

Two more books in the sample sit on the Read shelf with no date read, so no year counts them; the page names that under the cards.

Questions people ask next

Is this Goodreads' own Year in Books?

No. Year Cards is a separate free tool, not made by or affiliated with Goodreads. It reads the library export Goodreads gives every member.

Why is a book missing from my year?

It has no date read, or the date falls in another year. Edit the book on Goodreads to set the date you finished it, export again and drop the new file.

Can I make cards before the year ends?

Yes. The cards count every book read so far, so you can post a mid-year or end-of-year version whenever you like.

Is my library uploaded?

No. The CSV is read on your device; nothing leaves it.
